Secretary of State Rice Delivers New Catch Phrase on Iraq
Dateline Shannon, Ireland - January 13, 2007
During a stopover on her way to the Middle East, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice unveiled the latest weapon to stop growing sectarian violence in Iraq: a new catch phrase.
"We're going to get an opportunity to see whether or not this is working, whether or not the Iraqis are living up to their obligations," Rice said, foreshadowing the bomb she was about to drop on stunned reporters, "We're not pulling the plug on Iraq."
Coming just days after President Bush announced his plans to send an additional 21,500 troops to the embattled country, Rice's catch phrase sends an undenyable message to Iraq: We aren't running out of jingos.
"You really have to wonder about mixed messages at this point," says WNN Policy Analyst Ima Nexpert, "When she says we're not gonna 'pull the plug', I'm not sure if she's talking about Iraq or another Terri Schiavo. Is she trying to say that the Iraqi Government is in a permanent vegitative state? If we leave, are we euthanizing the country? I don't know if it will be a successful choice for the Secretary of State."
Indeed, this newest catch phrase seems to imply a grave weakness on the part of the Iraqi government and military at a time when their strength has never been more necessary. But the negative reaction to the slogan was not universal.
"I watch Fox News every day, and I know how you liberals in the mainstream media try to make us seem like we are losing the war," said Eugene L. Stoots of Texarkana, Arkansas, "You traitors just want to 'cut and run', but like she said we aren't gonna 'pull the plug' on Iraq. We've 'turned a corner' in Iraq's history, and we're continuing to 'fight the terrorists over there so that we don't have to fight them over here'. 'Remember, 9/11'? We've 'killed Al-Qaeda's number 2', and we've 'liberated the Iraqi people'. Our 'coalition of the willing' has 'stayed the course', but all you want to see is that 'war is hard'. But if we can 'continue to sacrifice' then soon we'll have a big 'mission accomplished'."
With mixed results at home, we will have to watch and see how this latest catch phrase is received during the rest of Rice's trip.
For WNN, this is Threewords Makeajingo reporting.
