SC to McCain: "Our Bad"

Dateline - Columbia, SC January 20, 2008

You voted for this guy? Really? Just 4 years removed from his crippling defeat at the hands of George Bush, John McCain last night was victorious in the South Carolina Republican Primary. Adding more evidence to the argument that it is McCain's turn in line to be the Republican nomineee, he handily defeated front-runners Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee. In the process he may also have mercifully ended the terminally narcoleptic campaign of Fred Thompson.

The victory serves as retribution for McCain, who was considered the favorite in South Carolina in 2004 before being defeated by George Bush after a slew of attacks alleging McCain had fathered illegitimate black children, then covered-up their existence. This time around, however, McCain was able to put the attacks behind him.

"Well, I'm not really in favor of electing someone who has a bunch of negro-babies running around," said Coot Haskins, longtime Columbia resident, "but I guess it could be worse, he could be a Mormon."

Personal feelings were not the only factor in McCain's victory, as his past policy decisions also weighed heavily in the minds of SC voters.

"What I'm looking for in a nominee," added Gennie Harris, a McCain supporter and poll volunteer, "is someone with an unwavering support of President Bush. Someone who is willing to be Bush's puppet, and follow his policies from 2008 forward. When McCain embraced George after losing last year, despite the tone of the campaign, and how he had been completely personally disgraced by his opponent, that showed me all I needed to see. John McCain is George Bush's lapdog, and the right choice for America in 2008."
