Sen. Biden Enters Presidential Race; Promptly Concedes Defeat

Dateline Washington, DC - January 31, 2007

Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware became the latest in a series of prominent Democrats to declare his intention to run for President in 2008. He also made news later in the day, also becoming the first to concede defeat.

It was a bullish morning for Biden, who started by saying Wednesday that he hoped to bring a "comprehensive notion" to combat the growing problems in Iraq and the world. The Senator, and foreign policy expert, opened with a salvo on Sen. Hillary Clinton, thought to be the front runner for the Democratic nomination thusfar.

"From the part of Hillary's proposal, the part that really baffles me is, 'We're going to teach the Iraqis a lesson,'" Biden said, "We're not going to equip them? OK. Cap our troops and withdraw support from the Iraqis? That's a real good idea."

Biden then, however, turned his attention to Sen. Barack Obama, the up-and-coming superstar of the Democratic ticket. By the end of the afternoon, Biden had conceded defeat to Obama by saying that Obama is "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."

When asked for a clarification on his statement, and reminded that Colin Powell and Condolezza Rice, among other prominent politicians, are African-American, Biden added:

"Well hey, he doesn't sit in the Senate chambers eating fried chicken and grits, or whatever it is those people eat. Besides, there's no way you can tell me that Colin Powell was actually black. Cynthia McKinney, now there's a typical black person. Put her in New Orleans and I bet she's looting Heineken out of a convenience store after Katrina, that's how those people usually are."

Indeed a historic day for American politics, as no candidate before has ever entered a race, and subsequently lost, so quickly.
