Bush: 'Don't Forget, Poland'
Dateline Washington, DC - February 15, 2007
In a startling call to arms, President Bush challenged NATO to begin reinforcing defense and peacekeeping forces in Afghanistan. The remarks came in response to growing violence and attacks by regrouped Taliban forces in the country.
"When our commanders on the ground say to our respective countries 'We need additional help,' our NATO countries must provide it," Bush said, "...The alliance was founded on this principle: an attack on one is an attack on all. That principle holds true whether the attack is on the home soil of a NATO nation or on allied forces deployed on a NATO mission abroad...By standing together in Afghanistan, NATO forces protect their own people."
The President stopped short of naming names, but did make allusions to nations that may not be living up to their end of the bargain in Afghanistan.
"We won't 'forget' certain nations who may be trying to abandon the cause. And for others, don't think that our shoulder rubs will just keep flowing if your support wains. However, the biggest offenders are those NATO member states who have diverted a large chunk of their troop strength and military focus to fight other wars in other countries, in one case, possibly, without an imminent threat or legitimate reason. A certain country in particular who thought they could go it alone, may have to rethink their commitment to securing and keeping the peace in Afghanistan. They possibly are not living up to their end of the NATO bargain."
