Duke Lacrosse Players Cleared of Rape

Dateline - Raleigh, NC April 11, 2007

3 Duke University Lacrosse players were cleared of wrong doing today after 395 days of investigation into the alleged rape of a stripper yielded no evidence to go forward. The former district attorney in the case, Mike Nifong, has now been placed under investigation for ethics violations.

Reade Seligmann, one of the 3 facing charges, thanked his lawyers for saving him from the horrendous "hoax" by saying that "...This entire experience has opened my eyes up to a tragic world of injustice...Further, I am glad that I live in a country where, with the right lawyers, a team of upper class white men can still hire a lower class black woman to perform degrading sexual acts on us without fear of reprocussions."

"It's been 395 days since this nightmare began. And finally today it's coming to a closure," added David Evans, another of the defendants, "We're just as innocent today as we were back then. Nothing has changed, the facts don't change. The facts of the case are that we found ourselves a cheap black woman, hired her for sexual encounters with our lacrosse team, and then were wrongly accused of assault. Everything that occurred that night was consentual and paid for, we even presented the ATM receipts from when we went to get the cash which we later changed into dollar bills to put into her G-string while she was spanking Collin."

Collin Finnerty, the final of the three defendants summed up his fellings by saying, "Knowing I had the truth on my side was really the most comforting thing at all throughout this last year. Well, that and the bottle of Jergins I went through remembering what we did to that woman."

Summing up the reasoning for the dismissal, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said that, "There were many points in the case where caution would have served justice better than bravado...In the rush to condemn, a community and a state lost the ability to see clearly. The truth is this: There was simply not enough evidence here to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that strippers and prostitutes are actually people like you and me."
