Couple Tries to Sell Kidnapped Children in Mexico

Dateline San Ysidro, CA - June 4, 2006

Jessica Heard, 20, and Edward Lieter, 37 were arrested today while crossing the border into the US on charges that they kidnapped their 6 children and attempted to sell them in Mexico. 5 of their 6 children were recovered, although it is believed that the sixth child may still be in Mexico.

An anonymous tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited children led US Marshals to Mexico in search of the couple.

Law Enforcement spokesperson, Guillermo Gonzalez, confirmed that the investigation into kidnapping charges led to the conclusion that the couple's intent was to sell their children on the black market.

"We believe that their intent was to sell, or to give away, these kids to families here in Mexico. The investigation is ongoing," he continued, "Its hard to beleive that anyone could do such a thing. I mean, the Peso is so weak. They probably got the equivalent of like $5 American for these kids. Plus haven't you seen Fox News lately? There's a 50/50 chance that once these kids got older they would have just jumped the border back to America anyways."

Truly an incomprehensible crime, indeed.
