Iraqi Violence May Increase After Zarqawi Strike

Dateline Baghdad - June 10, 2006

Only days after the airstrike that killed Iraqi insurgent leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, President Bush warned that insurgent violence may increase in the coming weeks.

"...Violence in Iraq may escalate. The terrorists and insurgents will seek to prove that they can carry on without Zarqawi," Bush said in his weekly radio address.

"We have turned a corner in Iraq, but the mission continues. But we're turning a corner, or rather we have turned a corner. We've turned many corners, but, ah, but we must persevere. The terrorists, they see that we are...we have...turned a corner. We're turning corners daily in Iraq. Perseverance, and corner turning, that's what we're doing in Iraq," Bush continued.

The President also took the opportunity to answer some of his criticism on the war in Iraq, and also on issues at home.

"What these people in the media need to understand, is that these terrorists, they hate our freedom. They want to undermine that freedom, and attack our family structure, our societal structure, and our freedom. These terrorists are trying to undermine our American system, and the rule of law. This is why I urge Congress to pass the amendment banning gay marriage."
