Washington State Declares War on Poker Discussion
Dateline Bellingham, WA - June 16, 2006
State officials today made their first attack in the newest
war on vice in America: online gambling. This attack came
not against gamblers or casinos themselves, but rather against
the website IntegrityCasinoGuide.com, who they say was
providing casino ratings and discussion boards.
"Writing about online gambling in a way that seems promotional
can earn a cease-and-desist order, and potentially, a criminal
charge," added Seattle Times Columnist Danny Westneat.
With exception already being made for online horse race
betting, and the Washington State Lottery, which has examined
selling tickets online in the past, this is certain to
be a contentious issue.
We here at WNN certainly believe in the rule of law. As such,
we would never attempt to blatantly flaunt this law by
printing such things as:
"GoldenPalace.com seems to be the most aggressively marketed
online gambling site in the world, and therefore must be a
very popular choice for people who gamble online."
or
"Partypoker.com also seems to be very popular, although I do
not know if you can play for real money there."
As this type of talk would possibly be outside the realm
of legality in Washington state, which may be where this site
happens to be hosted.
Additionally, we would never aim to give advice on how to be
a better gambler online, as this too, may be "aiding and
abetting" Washington gamblers. We did, however, seek out
Dennis "The Blankman" Thompson, a completely fictious pro
poker player, to give some analysis on the implications of
this law.
"Really its like the state of Washington is holding a 2 and 3
suited. They have come out trying to overextend the law,
which is gutsy, they are betting big, in this case, looking for
a straight or a flush. But then the flop comes out, K,9,J,
off suit. They've got nothing. What they should do in this
situation is drop the lawsuit. Or, to go with our analogy
THEY SHOULD FOLD. There's no way people will support this
legislation."
So there you have it, 2/3 suited, represent strong, bet big,
go for a stretch on the law. But when the flop comes, if
you don't get your cards, fold, or drop the charges. You
won't win a case by betting foolishly. This, of course, is
advice that Thompson was giving the government of Washington,
not online poker players...of course.
For WNN this is Class C. Felony* reporting.
