China Steps Up Attempt to Fill Buffet Spreads

Dateline Jining, China - Auguest 4th, 2006

Coming only days after local government officials in Yunnan province clubbed to death over 50,000 dogs to stop the spread of rabies, officials in Jining have announced their intention to put to death close to 500,000 animals.

The announcement comes as citizens search for a way to stop the spread of the disease throughout the population, which has claimed 16 lives so far. In many cases, "culling squads" have resorted to banging pots and pans as they roam through the streets at night, tracking animals by the sound of their bark. The measures have not been met with public approval, however, as many find the actions to be misguided and cruel.

"This really damages our national image," said Zhang Luping of the Beijing Human and Animal Education Centre, "[This] sets a really bad example to show how lazy and inconsiderate those local government officials are."

In response, local officials have begun a campaign justifying their actions.

Regional Chairperson Wang Xiaoximaio called the culling squads a necessary evil, and that the methods of clubbing, hanging, and electrocution are not inhumane.

"Look, there is a justified reason for all this," Xiaoximaio said in a statement earlier today, "We are not just clubbing the animals, we are tenderizing the meat. We do not want to waste the non-rabid ones, so we are merely preparing them for the wok should they be found to be healthy."

In a statement from the White House today, President Bush was surprisingly supportive of the move.

"The Chinese people face a terror, a horrible, silent terror. They have a right to defend their country from this terror, in whatever way they see fit. We believe that, like in Lebanon, this is a measured, reasonable response to a horrible, threatening terror. Furthermore, we are in talks with the Chinese government to send these culling squads to Beirut, in an attempt to assist Israel in rooting out Hezballah by banging pots and pans after dark."
