PETA Protests Pokemon Tournament

Dateline - Colorado Springs, CO August 16, 2007

Rape Stand (1000 Poke-dollars) In a show of solidarity with all animals great, small, and digital, PETA today picketed the monthly Pokemon tournament at a local collectable cards and games shop in suburban Colorado Springs. Mirroring demonstrations held earlier this month to protest the practice of competitive underground dog-fighting, protestors held signs depicting the horrible downside of the sport and encouraged parents not to allow their children to be involved in the activity.

In the game of Pokemon, children are encouraged to breed and raise various types of pets, and then have them fight against one another in order to gain new skills. PETA officials have alledged that, while seemingly innocent, this series of games is nothing more than a training ground for a future generation of dog-fighting entrepreneurs. Holding signs showing deformed Pikachu, maimed Typhlosii, and Larvitar buried in mass graves, the protestors blocked entrance to the tournament until riot police finally dispersed them with tear gas.

"Every animal has the right to live without fear and pain. It is our job to do whatever we can to ensure this basic right for all animals, and we intend to do just that," said Aevanh Smith, spokesman for the protestors, "Today, we sound a clarion call to all people: Stand up for what is right, and speak out against what is wrong. Hurting animals for human pleasure or gain is despicable. Cruelty is just plain wrong."*

Smith then enumerated PETA's specific greivances against the game of Pokemon.

"This game teaches children that their pets are disposable fighting machines of incredible power, many of whom may or may not have special super powers. What is going to happen when these children get dogs and cats of their own and find out that they can't shoot electricity or fly through walls? We've seen countless acts of cruelty perpetuated against Pokemon by children, and believe this game is nothing but a training simulator for pet violence."
