America Votes 2008: Day -14: McCain Strategizes for Victory
Dateline - Denver, CO October 21, 2008
Facing declining support in Iowa, Colorado, and New Mexico, Sen. John McCain's Presidential Campaign has begun shifting resources to other potential battleground states. Seeing perhaps a potential election day defeat in many of the states where President Bush found support, the campaign has begun targetting new areas in an attempt to rework the mathematics of success.
"Winning states is a type of old politics, the exact type of politics two mavericks like John McCain and Sarah Palin reject. Who are a representative's constituents, really," Davis continued, "We all know states are just arbitrary lines drawn on a map. We just intend to redraw those lines in a manner that best benefits our campaign. That's change you can believe in."
In a step that perhaps takes "purple America" one step further, Davis continued to explain the new strategy embraced by the McCain camp only weeks before Election Day.
"If we take the Shady Oaks Assisted Living facility in upstate NY out of NY and put it into our fictionalized state, 'East McCainia', then you can see that's another 3 electoral votes," he diagrammed, "That brings us to California. To think that all 54 votes from there need to go with the winner is just plain disenfranchising to the residents of Palm Springs, half of Beverly Hills, and most places north of San Francisco."
With this unprecidented step in campaign finagling, Davis runs the risk of being called a gerrymander, but that's not something he worries about.
"This new strategy isn't about taking away the value of someone's vote," he rationalizes, "Its about empowering voters. Take, for example, Iraq. Their votes have never counted in an American election before. Under our plan, we see McCain garnering between 25 and 35 electoral votes once we absorb the Anbar, Ninawa, and Salahaddin provinces into East McCainia."
