Celebration, Violence in Wake of Saddam Verdict

Dateline Iraq - November 6, 2006

Joyous celebrants paraded through the streets of Baghdad today, in support of the recently issued death penalty for former despot Saddam Hussein. Chants of "Saddam got death, die Baathists!" were heard throughout the city, as Shiia gathered to celebrate the sentencing of one of their greatest enemies.

"Saddam killed my father by executing my older brother," said one middle aged man through tears, "This day proves my belief in justice."

Not all in the streets shared this somber, solemn mood, however. Many of the younger crowd had a much more hostile message.

"This is a great day, and I hope to the Ayatollah, and to Allah, that all Baathists face the same fate," said one young man as he fired his AK-47 into the air, "I am going to go celebrate by shooting at some American imperialist forces!"

The mood in Tikrit, however, was far more violent. Here in Saddam's hometown, mobs of supporters gathered and chanted pro-Saddam slogans, threatening authorities with violence.

"Today is a black day for Iraq," said one man who had his face covered, "This is justice? Americans call this justice? We mustn't stand for this, we must go shoot at some imperialist American forces." He screamed as he fired his AK-47 into the air.

One can only hope that after the emotion of the moment passes, that these groups may one day find unity and common ground in Iraq. Indeed, some similarities must exist.

Only time will tell.
