Rep. Rangel to Bring Back Draft; Invade Iran, North Korea, Mars

Dateline Washington, DC - November 19, 2006

In sticking with their pledge to chart a new direction for America, House Democrat Rep. Charles Rangel today voiced his support for reinstating the draft. Rangel is expected to be tapped for House Ways and Means Committee chair when control shifts to the Democrats in January.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq...if we indeed had a draft...and members of Congress and the administration thought their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said, "Not necessarily my kids, however, but I'm sure that some kids, from somewhere, would be drafted."

Rangel has been a proponant of the draft from as early as 2003, when he proposed reinstating the draft to cover Americans aged 18 to 26, including last year's proposal to require registration for all Americans up to 42 years of age. These measures were blocked by the Republican-led Congress.

In speaking from her home district of San Francisco, Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi added that this type of progressive mindset what just a hint of what is to come in 2007.

"We're talking about raising the minimum wage, bringing common sense back to Washington, and bringing credibility back to politics. Did people really think that wasn't going to be without a cost? If we're going to raise minimum wage, we're going to make damn sure that lower income Americans can't shuck their responsibility to die in Iraq for that extra $0.75 an hour," Pelosi said.

In what would appear to be a slap in the face of many of the Democrats strongest supporters, Rangel also went further to say that "if we're going to challenge Iran, and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can't do that without a draft." He added, "further, if we're going to take this war on terror to Mars, we'll need even larger numbers of troops, and don't even get me started on waging interstellar combat with the Galactinoids from Xanthalon 7. That is going to take a lot more troops."

Rangel and Pelosi weren't the only ones speaking about this hot topic today, as Minority Whip-elect Trent Lott also voiced his support for the draft.

"I agree with Rep. Rangel that one cannot support this war in Iraq without supporting the draft," Lott said, "I don't quite understand his point about my kids being in harm's way, however. I mean, all my constituents are upper class and white, so their kids will get deferrments. So why wouldn't I vote to send more welfare negroes to Iraq?"
